Firm Attorney Noah Peters Files Brief on Equal Pay Act in Fourth Circuit

On April 4, 2018, firm attorney Noah Peters filed a brief on behalf of our client, Zoe Spencer. It contends that Virginia State University, her employer, violated the Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by paying her less than two similarly-situated male professors (Michael Shackleford and Cortez Dial). Dial and Shackleford were paid 50% and 70% more than Spencer, despite teaching fewer classes than her and lacking appropriate qualifications for their positions. When Spencer complained about pay disparities between male and female professors at VSU, VSU’s Provost, Weldon Hill, embarked on a campaign of retaliation against her that included intentionally delaying a required paycheck, threatening her repeatedly over email, and denying a requested salary increase.
